Visible in ChatGPT and beyond: how to get your website recommended by AI search

More and more people ask an AI instead of a search engine. What your website needs so that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI answers know it and cite it.

“Which agency in Switzerland builds multilingual websites?” Many people no longer type this question into Google. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or another AI assistant. Google itself now shows an answer above many search results that an AI assembles from several sources.

For companies, the goal is shifting. First place in the results list is no longer enough. What counts is being named in the answer.

How AI search chooses its sources

AI assistants with internet access search for suitable pages in the background, read them and summarise the content. They favour sources that answer a question clearly and completely, are technically easy to read and come across as trustworthy.

That leads to five levers.

1. Clear answers to real questions

Write content the way your customers ask. A services page titled “What we offer” helps little. A page that explains what a multilingual website costs, how long it takes and who it is right for gets cited. Frequently asked questions with short, precise answers are ideal for this.

2. Clean structure in the code

AI systems read the source code. Clear headings, correctly marked-up lists and real text instead of text in images make your content understandable to machines. The same applies to screen readers and search engines.

3. Structured data

With structured data based on the schema.org standard, you describe your company, services, articles and FAQs in a machine-readable way. That way an AI knows that ITrox is a web agency in Amriswil and which services it offers, without having to guess.

4. Trust and mentions

AI answers rely on sources that are also mentioned elsewhere. Mentions in trade media, industry directories and partner sites strengthen your credibility. Here, AI visibility overlaps with classic link building.

5. Speed and accessibility

Pages that load quickly and can be read without cookie hurdles are easier to capture. Also check your robots.txt: some websites block AI crawlers without knowing it.

What does not change

Good content remains the foundation. AI systems reward what also convinces people: expertise, clarity and honesty. If you invest in a well-structured, fast website today, you are ready for Google and for the AI search of tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI optimisation replace classic search engine optimisation?

No, it builds on it. AI systems rely on the same foundations: well-structured, fast and trustworthy pages. If you rank well on Google, you are in the best position.

Can I stop AI companies from using my content?

Partly. In your robots.txt file you can exclude individual crawlers such as GPTBot or Google-Extended. Bear in mind that your content will then appear less often in AI answers.

What is llms.txt?

A proposal for a file that gives language models a compact overview of your website. It is not yet a recognised standard. We add it on request, but we do not expect miracles from it.
